One of Sydney's Greatest Free Experiences
The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is consistently rated one of Australia's best urban walks — and it's completely free. Stretching roughly 6 kilometres along Sydney's eastern coastline, the walk takes you past dramatic sandstone cliffs, secluded ocean pools, surf beaches, and manicured clifftop parks. It's accessible to most fitness levels, packed with things to see and do along the way, and offers some of the most spectacular ocean scenery in any city in the world.

Getting to the Start: Bondi Beach
Bondi Beach is the most famous starting point and is easily reached from the city:
- Bus: The 333 and 380 routes run from Circular Quay and Bondi Junction to Bondi Beach regularly.
- Train + Bus: Take the train to Bondi Junction (T4 line), then connect via bus or taxi for the final stretch.
- Parking: Limited and competitive on weekends — public transport is strongly recommended.
The walk begins at the southern end of Bondi Beach, where a path climbs past Notts Avenue and onto the clifftop trail.
Key Stops Along the Way
1. Bondi Beach (Start)
Before you begin, take in the sweep of Bondi's famous crescent beach. If you're an early riser, the Icebergs Pool at the southern end of Bondi is an iconic spot for a pre-walk swim.
2. Mackenzies Bay & Tamarama Beach
About 1 kilometre in, the path curves around Mackenzies Bay — a rocky cove popular with locals — before dropping down to Tamarama Beach. Known locally as "Glamarama," Tamarama is small, beautiful, and less crowded than Bondi. The beach has a strong surf break and a charming café above the sand.
3. Bronte Beach
A family favourite, Bronte Beach sits about halfway along the walk. It has a sheltered ocean pool, excellent kiosk and café options, grassy picnic areas, and a naturally carved rock pool called the Bronte Baths. This is a great rest stop.
4. Waverley Cemetery
Perched dramatically on the cliffs between Bronte and Clovelly, Waverley Cemetery is one of the most beautifully situated burial grounds in the world. Dating from the 1870s, it's worth a slow walk through the headstones and clifftop lookouts.
5. Clovelly Beach
Unique among Sydney beaches, Clovelly is a narrow inlet of calm, clear water — almost like a natural lido. It's beloved by snorkellers and families with young children. There's no surf here, just gentle, safe water. A great swimming stop on a warm day.
6. Gordons Bay
A quieter, less-visited spot between Clovelly and Coogee, Gordons Bay is a shaded, rocky beach popular with divers. The calm bay is home to an underwater nature trail.
7. Coogee Beach (End)
The walk finishes at Coogee, a lively beach suburb with a wide sandy beach, great restaurants, and multiple bus routes back to the city. Grab a meal or a drink at one of the beachfront venues to celebrate finishing the walk.
What to Bring
- Comfortable walking shoes (sandals are fine on the well-paved path)
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat — UV exposure is serious in Sydney
- Water bottle
- Swimmers and a towel if you want to dip at any of the beaches
- Small amount of cash or card for café stops
Practical Tips
- The path is paved and well-signed throughout — it's very hard to get lost.
- Toilets and showers are available at each of the main beaches.
- Dogs are not permitted on most of the beaches.
- The walk is pram-accessible for most of its length, though some sections have steps.
The Bondi to Coogee walk is Sydney at its absolute best — dramatic coastline, golden beaches, and the easy, outdoor lifestyle the city is known for. It should be on every visitor's itinerary and revisited by every local, season after season.
